How to Use Voice Assistants for Seniors
You can talk to your phone instead of typing — and it will answer back. Voice assistants are one of the most useful features on any phone, and they're built right in.
What Is a Voice Assistant?
A voice assistant is a helpful program that listens when you talk and does things for you — like making a phone call, checking the weather, setting a timer, or answering a question. You don't have to type anything. You just speak.
- Siri — built into every iPhone and iPad
- Google Assistant — built into Android phones
- Alexa — Amazon's assistant, found on Echo speakers and available as a free app on any phone
🍎 Using Siri on iPhone
How to start Siri
-
1Say "Hey Siri" out loud. You don't need to press anything — just say those two words and wait for a soft chime. Siri is listening.
-
2Ask your question or give a command. Speak naturally, as if talking to a person. For example: "Hey Siri, call my daughter" or "Hey Siri, what's the weather today?"
-
3Listen to Siri's response. Siri will speak the answer aloud and show it on screen. If needed, you can follow up: "Hey Siri, call her on speakerphone."
Things to say to Siri
- "Hey Siri, call John"
- "Hey Siri, send a text to Mary saying I'll be there at 3"
- "Hey Siri, set a reminder to take my medication at 8am"
- "Hey Siri, what's the weather this weekend?"
- "Hey Siri, set a timer for 20 minutes"
- "Hey Siri, how do I get to the pharmacy?"
🤖 Using Google Assistant on Android
How to start Google Assistant
-
1Say "Hey Google" or "OK Google" out loud. Your phone will chime and show a colored bar or circle at the bottom — it's listening.
-
2Ask your question. Speak naturally: "Hey Google, what time does CVS close?" or "Hey Google, call my son."
-
3Listen and respond. Google Assistant speaks back. You can have a back-and-forth conversation — no need to say "Hey Google" again for follow-up questions.
Things to say to Google Assistant
- "Hey Google, call my daughter"
- "Hey Google, remind me to take my pills at noon"
- "Hey Google, is it going to rain today?"
- "Hey Google, play relaxing music"
- "Hey Google, set an alarm for 7am tomorrow"
- "Hey Google, what's 15% tip on $42?"
🔵 Using Alexa (on Any Phone)
Alexa is Amazon's voice assistant. You may already know it from Echo speakers, but it also works as a free app on your iPhone or Android phone.
-
1Download the "Amazon Alexa" app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). It's free.
-
2Sign in with your Amazon account. If you don't have one, you can create a free account — it only takes a few minutes.
-
3Tap the microphone button in the app and speak your request. Or enable "Alexa" wake word in the app settings to use it hands-free.
Tips for Getting Better Results
- Speak slowly and clearly. Voice assistants work best when you don't rush. You don't need to shout — a normal speaking voice works fine.
- Be in a quiet room. Background noise (TV, radio) can confuse voice assistants. Step into a quieter spot if it's not understanding you.
- Use first names for contacts. Instead of "Call my granddaughter Emma Johnson who lives in Portland," just say "Call Emma." If you have multiple contacts with that name, it will ask which one.
- Don't worry about exact wording. "What will the weather be?" "Is it going to rain?" "Do I need an umbrella today?" — all work equally well. Speak naturally.
- If it mishears you, just try again. Say the wake word again and rephrase your question. It won't get frustrated.
