How to Video Call on iPad for Seniors

See your grandchildren's faces from your living room. This guide shows you exactly how to use FaceTime and Zoom on your iPad — no tech experience needed.

Which App Should You Use?

There are two easy options for video calls on iPad:

If your family uses iPhones, start with FaceTime. It's the simplest option.

📱 Using FaceTime on iPad

FaceTime is already installed on your iPad — you don't need to download anything. It's completely free.

  1. 1
Find the FaceTime app. Look for the green icon with a white video camera on your home screen. Tap it to open.
  2. 2
Tap the pencil icon. You'll see a small pencil and paper icon in the top right corner. Tap it to start a new call.
  3. 3
Type the person's name. Start typing the name of who you want to call. If they're in your contacts, their name will pop up — tap it.
  4. 4
Tap the green video button. You'll see two buttons — a phone and a video camera. Tap the green video camera to make a video call.
  5. 5
Wait for them to answer. You'll hear a ringing sound. When they pick up, their face will appear on your screen and they'll see yours.
  6. 6
To hang up, tap the red button. When you're finished talking, tap the red circle at the bottom of your screen.
💡 Tip: FaceTime only works between Apple devices — iPhones, iPads, and Macs. If your family member has an Android phone, use Zoom instead.

💻 Using Zoom on iPad

Zoom works with any device — iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac. Your family doesn't need an iPad to join your call.

Step 1: Download the Zoom app

  1. 1
Open the App Store. Find the blue App Store icon on your home screen (it has a white "A" made of sticks). Tap it.
  2. 2
Search for "Zoom." Tap the Search tab at the bottom, type "Zoom," and tap Search.
  3. 3
Install the free app. Find "Zoom — One Platform to Connect" and tap "Get." It's free. Confirm with your Face ID or Apple ID password if asked.

Step 2: Join a call your family starts

The easiest way to start is to have a family member send you a Zoom link — usually by text or email.

  1. 1
Tap the link your family sent. It will open the Zoom app automatically.
  2. 2
Tap "Join." You may be asked to enter your name — type your first name so family can see who you are.
  3. 3
Allow camera and microphone. Zoom will ask permission to use your camera and microphone. Tap "Allow" for both.
  4. 4
Tap "Join with Video." You'll see yourself in a small box and your family's faces will appear on screen.
💡 Tip: If you can't hear anyone, look for a small microphone icon at the bottom left and make sure it's not crossed out (muted). Tap it once to unmute yourself.

Common Problems — and Easy Fixes

"They can't hear me"

During a Zoom call, check the microphone icon at the bottom left of the screen. If there's a red line through it, you're muted. Tap it once to unmute. During FaceTime, make sure your volume isn't turned down — use the side buttons to turn it up.

"They can't see me" (or I see a black screen)

In Zoom, tap the "Start Video" button at the bottom left. In FaceTime, this usually means the other person's internet is slow — ask them to move closer to their Wi-Fi router.

"My iPad won't let me open FaceTime"

FaceTime needs to be turned on in your iPad's settings. Go to Settings → FaceTime and make sure the green switch is turned on.

⚠️ Important: You need a Wi-Fi connection for video calls to work well. If you're on a slow connection, the video may freeze or look blurry. Try moving closer to your Wi-Fi router.
